Role Overview

The Sommelier plays a critical role in enhancing the dining experience by expertly selecting and pairing wines with food. This position requires a deep understanding of wine regions, varietals, and tasting notes, as well as an ability to educate staff and guests on wine choices. Working closely with chefs and the culinary team, the Sommelier curates the wine list to align with the restaurant’s menu while driving sales and promoting a wine-centric culture within the establishment.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Wine Selection Management

    Curate an extensive and diverse wine list featuring both local and international options. Conduct periodic reviews to ensure the selection aligns with customer preferences and seasonal trends.

  • Guest Wine Consultation

    Advise guests on wine pairings based on their meal choices and preferences, enhancing their dining experience. Offer personalized recommendations to accommodate varying taste profiles.

  • Staff Training and Education

    Conduct regular training sessions for staff, enhancing their wine knowledge and service skills. Foster a comprehensive understanding of wine regions, varietals, and pairing techniques.

  • Wine Inventory Management

    Oversee inventory levels, ensuring adequate stock of high-demand wines while minimizing overstock. Develop vendor relationships to negotiate favorable purchasing agreements.

  • Event Wine Planning

    Plan and execute wine-centric events such as tastings and pairing dinners. Coordinate with kitchen staff to design menus that complement selected wines, enhancing event experiences.

  • Quality Assurance

    Regularly taste wines to ensure quality standards are maintained, identifying any issues with taste or storage. Implement corrective actions to maintain consistency in serving quality wines.

  • Customer Feedback Analysis

    Collect and analyze guest feedback on wine selections and pairings, using insights to refine offerings. Implement changes based on data to enhance overall guest satisfaction.

Typical Required Skills and Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in a restaurant or hospitality environment
  • Certified in wine education, such as a Level 2 or higher from the Court of Master Sommeliers
  • Strong knowledge of food and wine pairings
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
